Where to Eat & Sip On a Weekend Trip to Porto

Bom dia from the north! I just got back from a little getaway to Porto and wanted to share some of the gems I discovered (with a little help a foddie friend and some good old-fashioned wandering). If you're planning a trip soon, save this list.

🇵🇹 Traditional Flavours
Right by São Bento station, O Rápido is a proper time capsule of a restaurant. Small, unpretentious, and full of locals and serves honest, traditional Portuguese food. It's where we tried Tripa à Moda do Porto, the city’s signature dish made with tripe, white beans and several other types of meat and sausage. While the dish is definitely for the brave, it’s a must-try for anyone curious about Porto’s culinary roots. A great place to experience tradition—just come with an open mind and an empty stomach.

🍞 Modern Portuguese

We stumbled upon this place while exploring the neighbourhood and were so pleasantly surprised. Barro offers a modern take on Portuguese cuisine with standout seafood dishes, very welcoming service and the kind of bread and butter as a couvert you’ll want to take home. A perfect mix of cozy and elevated.

🥞 What trip goes well without late morning brunch?
Well, getting a table in Porto’s popular brunch spots on a weekend? Not so easy. We tried a few, but standing in long queues just isn’t our style. So, we took to the backstreets of the city center—and that’s how we found Do Norte Café by Hungry Biker. It turned out to be a total gem: great coffee, tasty brunch options, a relaxed vibe, and a lovely interior with mountain-inspired touches and cozy details.

🌭 A Bite to Keep You Going

Need a quick energy boost between strolls? Gazela is the spot. Famous for its cachorrinhos—mini spicy hot dogs toasted to crispy perfection—it’s a no-fuss, full-flavor kind of place. Just a tip: try to avoid peak hours, as this local favorite draws quite a crowd.

🍷 For the Natural Wine Lovers
If you’re into natural wines, Porto has some lovely spots. We visited two that stood out. A Cave de Bon Vivant is intimate and rustic, with a selection that feels curated by someone who really loves wine. Genuíno, located just around the corner from Barro, is a little sleeker but equally warm and welcoming. Bonus: Genuíno is located in one of Porto’s lesser-known art districts, filled with galleries and studios. Perfect for an afternoon of wine and wandering.

Let me know if you check out any of these—or have your own Porto favorites to share. Maybe we need a trip up north soon? 👀

😉 About Good Vibes Day Out

It all started with the hike in Sintra back in February 2023 to meet people and make friends. Step by step, lunch by lunch, hike after hike it grew into a community of people who appreciate spending great time outdoors and value building long-lasting connections. There is a cozy WhatsApp group for those who attended the events. There we discuss ideas for future events and organize get-togethers outside of publicly announced events.

Our vibe is chill and laid-back. Good Vibes Day Out is about sharing the experience, exploring, enjoying great food, having deeper conversations, embracing diversity, and leaving room for spontaneity so that everyone can add their colors to the weekend and let things happen.
